Attention, All gearheads and nostalgia buffs! Honda is bringing back a beloved icon – the Prelude!
Similar to Volkswagen’s revival of the VW Bus, Honda engineers are reviving the Prelude with a more greener attitude as the 2026 iteration will seamlessly blend the familiar classic sporty charm with cutting-edge hybrid technology.
A Legacy of Performance
The original Honda Prelude, launched in the late-1970s, carved its niche as a driver’s dream. Its sleek silhouette, nimble handling, and sporty spirit captured the hearts of enthusiasts for decades. The Prelude was the first Honda model to offer a power moonroof as standard equipment, which eventually became a Prelude trademark. The release of the 5th gen prelude in 1996 introduced Honda enthusiasts to a sleeker, sports coupe that also included a ‘type-SH’ model that offered Honda’s ‘Active Torque Transfer System‘. Sales began to weaken during the production of the third generation Prelude, particularly due to competition from Honda’s other offerings. By 2001, production of the Honda Prelude ceased, leaving a void in the hearts of many.
Reborn for a New Era
At the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show, Honda surprised spectators by unveiling the new Honda Prelude Concept. At first most details and questions about the production of the car were unspoken. However between then and now, minor details have been revealed or teased such as the car’s powertrain and confirmation of an actual production model. The 2026 Prelude honors its heritage while embracing the future. While more details are still emerging, here’s what we can expect:
- Hybrid Powertrain: A modern twist on performance! The new Prelude will combine a powerful gasoline engine with an electric motor, as a nod to Honda’s future in producing electric engine. There’s no word on whether or not Honda is reviving the ‘Type-SH’ badge with the new line. But seeing as how they have introduced the ‘Type R’ options to certain new Honda and Acura models, then I suspect it won’t be long until some form of the ‘Type-SH’ is dropped before the consumers.
- Striking Design: Expect a design that evokes the classic Prelude’s iconic lines, with a modern and sophisticated edge. Dimensions of the two-door coupe was said to be 169 inches long, 70 inches wide, and 51 inches tall, nearly identical to the Toyota GR86.
- Driver-Focused Interior: Umm,…. yet to be determined. But im sure elements of efficiency, and safety with a touch of sportiness, will definitely be seen through out the interior.
More Than Just Nostalgia
The return of the Prelude signifies a new chapter for Honda. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of classic design, while showcasing the brand’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Stay Tuned!
The official full reveal of the 2026 Honda Prelude is expected later in 2024 or early 2025, with a production release date likely in 2026. The price of the upcoming Honda Prelude is expected to start within an affordable range around $31,000-$38,000 depending on the trim and options of course. As a bit of a car enthisiast myself, I can’t wait to see what the aftermarket crowd has in-store for the Prelude as hybrids do have the potential to unlock ALOT of torque and horsepower similar to a full electric.
Whether you’re a seasoned Prelude fan or a newcomer seeking a thrilling and eco-conscious ride, the 2026 Prelude promises to be a legend reborn.
